Enroute to Gethsemane
John 15:1-17:26

Pre-dawn, Thursday, March 5, 33 A.D.

John gives an extensive review of the discussion of Jesus and the disciples as they left Jerusalem and descended into the Kidron Valley. There, Jesus would struggle with what lay ahead. Oddly, none of the synoptic gospels kept this.

He begins with the parable of the vine and branches. Many think this was a comment given as Jesus observed the decorations of the walls. Since Passover always comes at full moon, it would have been a bright night as they exited.

As they continued their descent, he foretold their rejection by future rabbinic leadership. That was fulfilled when Jesus-followers refused to follow bar-Kokhba as the Messiah in the rebellion against Rome. In that period, a thirteenth blessing was added to the existing twelve which was a curse on the followers of the Nazarene.
