Sadducees try to Entrap Jesus over Marriage
Matthew 22:23-33; Mark 12:18-27; Luke 20:27-38

Matthew 22:23-33

The same day a group of Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, approached him and asked, “Rabbi, Moses said that if a man dies without children, his brother must marry his widow and propagate a child for his brother.

“Now there were seven brothers in a family. The eldest, after he had married a wife died without children and left his widow to his brother. In the same way, the second died, and the third, down to the seventh. Last, the woman died. So, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be—for they all had her as their wife?”

Jesus answered and said to them, “You reason incorrectly because you don’t know the scriptures—nor the power of God for that matter. In the resurrection no one marries or is given marriage, because in heaven everyone is like the angels of God.

“But as far as the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read what God said when he said, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob?’ God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

Mark 12:18-27

Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked, “Rabbi, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies without children and leaves his wife behind, that his brother should take her as his wife. He is to then propagate a child for his brother.

“Now there were seven brothers. The eldest took a wife and died without a child. Next, the second took her and died without any children, and the third as well. Eventually, all seven had her and left no children. Last, the woman died. So, in the resurrection, when they all rise, whose wife will she be, for all seven had her as a wife?”

“You reason incorrectly because you don’t know the scriptures—nor the power of God for that matter. In the resurrection no one marries or is given marriage, because in heaven everyone is like the angels of God.

“But as for the dead, they do rise. Have you not read in the writings of Moses, how in the bush God spoke to him and said, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You reason incorrectly.”

Luke 20:27-38

Then some of the Sadducees, who deny there is any resurrection, came to him. They asked him, “Rabbi, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s married brother dies and has no children, that his brother should take his widow and propagate a child for his brother.

“Now, there were seven brothers and the first took a wife but died without children. The second took her as a wife and he also died childless. The third took her, and so on, until the seven all died and left no children. Last of all, the woman died. Therefore, in the resurrection whose wife will she be, for seven had her as a wife.”

And Jesus answered and said to them, “The children of this world marry and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to reach that world—and the resurrection from the dead—neither marry nor are given in marriage. Neither can they die any more for they are like the angels and are the children of God, children of the resurrection.

“Now the dead are raised. Even Moses showed that, while at the bush, when he called the Lord, the ‘God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is not a God of the dead, but of the living for all live unto him.”
