The placing of the text telling of Palm Sunday may seem a bit arbitrary, but there is a logic to it. John finishes the story of the dinner with the family of Lazarus and then says, “the next day” Jesus entered Jerusalem to the cheers of the people.

Just before his comment about entering Jerusalem, John recorded the events of the Sabbath meal. Though that was Friday evening, in Jewish terms it was the beginning of Saturday. Thus, “the next day” was Sunday. No events are posted on Saturday, the continuation of the Sabbath.
