Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man
Luke 16:19-31

“There was a certain rich man who wore the finest clothing and ate only gourmet food. There was also a beggar named Lazarus, who was placed at his gate to beg. He was full of sores, just wanting to eat the rich man’s food that he dropped from his table. Further, the dogs came and licked his sores.

“And eventually, the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And tormented in hades, he lifted his eyes, and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus in his bosom.

“And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus, that he may dip just the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for this flame is a torment.’

“But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember how in your lifetime you gained your comfort while Lazarus received bad things in the same way. Now, he is in comfort, and you in torment. Besides that, there is a great expanse between us and you, so we can’t come to you.

“Then he said, ‘Because of that, please send him to my father’s house because I have five brothers. That way he can warn them so they not end up in this terrible place.’

“Abraham saith to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’

“And he said, ‘No, father Abraham! But if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.

“And he said to him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be convinced by one rising from the dead either.’”
