Healing of a Blind Man

Matthew 16:5-12, Mark 8:14-26

Matthew 16:5-12

And when his disciples arrived on the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. Then Jesus said to them, “Take note; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” And they talked it over, saying, “Is it because we didn’t bring any bread?”

When Jesus realized what they were discussing, he said to them, “O you of little faith! Why are talking with each other, thinking I was talking about that fact that you didn’t bring bread? Don’t you understand or remember the five loaves that fed the 5,000, and the baskets of leftovers? What about the 4,000 and the baskets full you gathered? How could you not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread, when I told you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?” Then they understood that he was not talking about bread, but the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Mark 8:14-26

Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread. Even in the ship, there was only one loaf. And he warned them, saying, “Be careful, watch out for the leaven of the Pharisees, and of Herod.” And talking with each other, they said, “Is it because we have no bread?”

And when Jesus realized it, he said to them, “Why are talking about not bringing bread? Don’t you realize what I was really saying or understand? Are your hearts still that hardened? You have eyes, but you don’t see, and ears but you don’t hear.

“When I divided the five loaves among the 5,000, how many baskets full of fragments did you collect?”

They answered, “Twelve.”

“And when the seven among the 4,000, how many baskets full of fragments did you gather?”

And they said, “Seven.”

Then he said to them, “How is it that you do not understand?”

And when he arrived at Bethsaida, a blind man was brought to him, and they asked him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. When he had spit on his eyes and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he could see anything. And he looked up, and said, “I see men like trees, but walking.”

He put his hands on his eyes again, and made him look up. Then his sight was restored, and he saw everyone. Then he sent him home and told him to not go back into town, or tell anyone in the town what had happened.
