Peter's First Denial
John 18:15-18
Between 3:00-6:00 a.m., Thursday, March 5, 33 A.D.
Courtyard of Annas, Jerusalem
While Jesus was being questioned, a second drama was unfolding. Peter was in the courtyard of Annas, a hostile environment. When John went to get him to bring him inside, the girl at the gate asks if he is with Jesus. There, in the courtyard of Annas, Peter makes his first denial. Matthew, Mark, and Luke only speak of the events after Jesus arrived at the palace of Caiaphas, giving Peter’s denial of Jesus that occurred there.
The specific events of this initial denial are as follows: (1) Peter and John follow the arresting party to the palace of Annas; (2) John gets Peter into Annas’s courtyard; (3) the girl who allows him through the gate suggests he is a disciple of Jesus; (4) he denies and joins the servants around their fire. There is no crowing of the rooster at this time.
