Jesus Fulfills Zachariah's Prophecy
Matthew 21:1-7, Mark 11:1-10, Luke 19:28-36
Matthew 21:1-7
As they approached Jerusalem at Bethpage, going to the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you and you will find a donkey tied there with her colt. Untie them and bring them to me. And if anyone says anything about it, say, ‘Their Lord needs them,’ and immediately, he will send them.”
All this was done, to fulfill what the prophet said, “You tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Look, your king is coming to you, meekly riding on a donkey with its colt, the foal of a donkey.”
And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and its colt, placed their clothes on them, and set him on it.
Mark 11:1-10
And as they approached Jerusalem, at Bethpage and Bethany on the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples ahead, and said to them, “Go ahead to the next village, and as soon as you enter it, you will see a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it to me. And if any man asks what you are doing, tell them that the Lord needs it. He will send it right away.”
And they went and found the colt tied outside by the door. It was just outside on the open street, so they untied it. And one of the people there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?”
And they gave him the answer as Jesus had instructed, and he let them go. So, they brought the colt to Jesus, and put their garments on it and he sat on it.
Many in the crowd carpeted the road with their garments. Others cut down branches from the trees and scattered them in the road. Those that went ahead and those that followed him, shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest!”
Luke 19:28-38
And when he was almost to Bethpage and Bethany, at the top of the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples ahead, saying, “Go into the village ahead of you that you are about to enter. There, you will find a colt tied that no one has ever ridden. Untie him and bring him to me. If anyone asks why you’ve untied him, just say, ‘Because its Lord needs it.”
Going ahead, they found things just as he had said. And as they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
And they said, “The Lord needs it.” Then, they brought it to Jesus, put their garments on the colt, and put Jesus on it. And as he went, others spread their clothes in the way.
