On the Cross
Matthew 27:33-44, Mark 15:22-32, Luke 23:32-43, John 19:17-27
Matthew 27:33-44
And when they had arrived at Golgotha, that is, the place like a skull, they gave him wine mixed with gall. When he tasted it, he rejected it. They crucified him and divided his garments among themselves.
They sat down and kept watch. They placed his accusation above his head, which read, “This Is Jesus, The King of The Jews.”
Two thieves were crucified with him, one on the right hand and the other on his left. People that passed by insulted him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
The chief priests also mocked him, as well as the scribes and elders. They said, “He saved others, but he can’t same himself. If he is to be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross. Then we’ll believe him. He trusted in God, let him rescue him now—if he wants him. He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
The thieves, who were being crucified with him, joined in the mocking.
Mark 15:22-32
They brought him to Golgotha, which is interpreted the place of a skull. And they gave him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but he rejected it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among themselves, casting lots to decide what each should get.
It was the third hour when they crucified him. And his accusation was written above him, “The King of the Jews.” They crucified two thieves with him, one on his right and the other on his left. Thus, the scripture was fulfilled which says, “He was counted with the lawbreakers.”
And those that passed insulted him, shaking their heads and saying, “Ah, you that would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save thyself! Come down from the cross.”
Moreover, the chief priests mocked him and discussed it with the scribes, saying, “He saved others, but he can’t save himself. Let Messiah, King of Israel, come down off the cross, so we can see and believe.” And the ones crucified with him mocked him as well.
Luke 23:32-43
Also, there were two criminals led away with him to be put to death. And when they arrived at Calvary, they crucified him and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.
Then said Jesus, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing.”
And they divided his clothing and cast lots for it as the people stood around watching. The rulers joined them in their contempt for him, saying, “He saved others, let him save himself—if he is the Messiah, the chosen one of God.” The soldiers mocked him as well. They approached him offering him wine-vinegar, saying, “If you are the king of the Jews, save thyself.”
And a proclamation was written over him in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew stating, This Is The King Of The Jews.
One of the criminals hanging there also complained, saying, “If you are the Messiah, save thyself—and us.” But the other scolded him, and said, “Don’t you fear God as you are about to die, too? We received justice, the due reward for what we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
And Jesus said to him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”
John 19:17-27
Bearing his cross, he went from there to a place called the place of a skull, or in Hebrew, Golgotha. There, they crucified him with two others, one on either side of him and Jesus in the middle.
And Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. It said, “Jesus of Nazareth, The King of The Jews.” Many of the Jews read it, because where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
When the chief priests of the Judeans saw it, they complained to Pilate, “Don’t write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”
Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
The soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, divided his clothing into four groups, one for each soldier. However, his tunic was seamless, woven from the top down. Discussing it among themselves, they said, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for who will get it.” Thus, the scripture was fulfilled which says, “They divided my clothing among them and cast lots for my apparel.” These things the soldiers did.
Now gathered at Jesus’s cross was his mother and her sister, Mary, the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing by, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that time on, that disciple took her to live in his own home.”
