Peter's Third Denial
Matthew 26:71-75, Mark 14:69-72, Luke 22:59-62, John 18:26-27
Matthew 26:71-75
And when he had gone out onto the porch, another girl saw him, and said to those that were there, “This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.”
And again, he denied it, swearing, “I do not know the man.”
And after a while the others there came to him and said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them. Your accent gives you away!”
Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, “I don’t know the man!” And immediately, the rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”
And he went out, and wept bitterly.
Mark 14:69-72
A girl saw him again, and began to say to the others there, “This is one of them.”
And he denied it again. Shortly thereafter, those standing around with Peter said to him again, “Surely, you’re one of them. You’re a Galilean; your accent gives you away.”
But he began to curse and to swear, saying, “I know not this man you’re talking about. And the second time, the rooster crowed.
And Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will have denied me three times.”
And when he realized it, he wept.
Luke 22:59-62
And about an hour later, another there agreed confidently, saying, “I swear it is true. This fellow was one of those with him because he is a Galilean.”
And Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
And the Lord turned, and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered what the Lord had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will have denied me three times.” And Peter went out and wept bitterly.
John 18:26-27
One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of the man Peter struck and cut off his ear, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
Peter then denied again and immediately the rooster crowed.
