The Burial of Jesus

Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56a; John 19:38-42

Matthew 27:55-61

Several women who had followed Jesus from Galilee caring for his needs, watched from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's children.

When evening came, Joseph, a rich man from Arimathea, went to Pilate. A disciple of Jesus, he asked for the body of Jesus. So, Pilate released the body to him. Joseph took the body down, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and put it in his own new tomb, which was hewn out of a rock. He rolled a large stone closing the door of the crypt and left. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sat watching.

Mark 15:40-47

There were also women watching at a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James the less and of Joseph, and Salome—who had cared for his needs in Galilee—and many other women, which had come up with him to Jerusalem.

And now as evening came, beginning the preparation, (that is, the day before the Sabbath) Joseph of Arimathea, an upright counselor who awaited the kingdom of God, came to Pilate. He boldly asked for the body of Jesus.

Pilate was amazed to hear he was already dead. He called the centurion and asked how long he had been dead. When he was convinced by the report of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

And he bought fine linen, took him down, and wrapped him in the linen. He placed him in a tomb that had been hewn out of a rock and rolled a stone over the door of the sepulcher.

Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joseph, saw where he was placed.

Luke 23:49-55

Several who knew him and the women who followed him from Galilee stood at a distance, watching what occurred.

And, surprisingly, a just national counselor name Joseph, was there. He had not agreed with the Sanhedrin and their actions. He was from Arimathea, a Jewish city, and was, himself, waiting for the kingdom of God. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. He took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn in stone, where it had never been used.

And that day was the preparation, and the Sabbath was coming. The women who had come with him from Galilee, followed him and saw the sepulcher and how the body had been prepared.

John 19:38-42

After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a secret disciple of Jesus because he feared the Judeans, asked Pilate if he could take down the body of Jesus and Pilate permitted it. So, he came and took the body of Jesus.

Nicodemus, who had met Jesus at night, came with him and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about a hundred pounds. They took down the body of Jesus, wound it in linen clothes with the spices as the Judeans do.

Near where he was crucified, there was a garden with a new sepulcher which had never been used. There, they placed Jesus because it was the Jewish preparation day and the sepulcher was nearby.
