The Witness of the Centurion and Others

Matthew 27:54; Mark 15:39; Luke 23:47-48; John 19:31-36

Matthew 27:54

Now when the centurion and those with him watching Jesus, saw the earthquake and the other things that occurred, they were terrified, and said, “This was absolutely the Son of God.”

Mark 15:39

When the centurion standing near him saw that he cried out and released his spirit, he said, “Surly this man was the Son of God.”

Luke 23:47-48

Now when the centurion saw what occurred, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous man.” And all the people that had come to watch, when they saw what occurred, beat their chests and left.

John 19:31-37

The Judeans insisted that the bodies be removed rather than remain on the cross, for that Sabbath was a high day. They asked Pilate to break their legs to hasten death so they could be removed.

Therefore, during preparation day, the Judeans asked that the bodies not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, it being a special Sabbath. They asked Pilate if he would break their legs, so they would die quicker.

Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first of the condemned and the other one that was crucified with him. However, when they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead and so, did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and blood and water came out.

And he who saw this, reported what he saw and his record is true. He knows his report is true, given so you might believe. These things occurred that the scripture would be fulfilled, saying, “None of his bones shall be broken.” Also, it fulfilled another scripture, which says, “They shall look on him whom they pierced.”
