Defense of the Disciples for not Fasting
Matthew 9:14-17; Mark 2:18-22; Luke 5:33-39
Galilee
Early Spring, 31 A.D.
The contention over Jesus associating with those of whom the Pharisees did not approve eventually grew to include some of John’s followers. Apparently, Levi’s party not only included “sinners” but was also on a day the Pharisees fasted.
Luke tells us that those complaining tried to leverage their argument. They argue that Jesus and his disciples are not following John’s standards, putting John with them in this issue. Eventually, they pull in some Pharisees who are also followers of John and have them confront Jesus.
Both parables reflect human nature. We don’t like change, but new things can’t be boxed into old ways.
