Healing of the Paralytic

Matthew 9:2-8, Mark 2:1-12, Luke 5:17-26

Matthew 9:2-8

Look, they brought a paralytic to him on a hammock. Seeing their faith, Jesus said, “Cheer up, son! Your sins are forgiven.”

And look! Some of the scribes began to say to each other, “This man blasphemed!”

Knowing what they were thinking—and saying—Jesus said, “Why are you thinking evil thoughts? Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven, or rise and walk?’ (But so you can know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralytic, “Get up. Take your mattress and go home.”) Immediately, he got up and left for home.

The crowds seeing this was astonished and glorified God for giving such authority to men.

Mark 2:1-12

Sometime later, Jesus returned to Capernaum and it was discovered he was home. People quickly gathered until the house was full and even crowding at the door. And he taught the word to them.

And four men came, bringing a paralytic. When they could not get through the crowd, they tore off the roof over Jesus and lowered the paralytic down on a hammock. Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Now, there were some of the scribes seated there, who questioned in their minds, “Why is he saying that? He blasphemes! No one can forgive sins but God.” Jesus instantly knew in his spirit what they were thinking and said to them, “Why are you reasoning so in your minds? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven’—or, to say ‘Pick up your hammock and go home?’

Immediately, the man picked up his mattress and left! Everyone was amazed and glorified God, saying, “We’ve never seen anything like that!”

Luke 5:17-26

One of the days when Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting among the crowd who had come from all over Galilee, Judea, and even Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal.

And, look! Some men brought a paralytic on a hammock and tried to get him in before Jesus. And when they could not get him through the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him through the tiles on his hammock right in front of Jesus.

Seeing their faith, he said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven.”

The scribes and the Pharisees began to confer with each other, saying, ‘Who is this man who blasphemies? No one can forgive sins, except God.”

Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to them, “Why are you questioning this in your minds? Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven’—or to say, ‘Get up and walk?’

“But to let you know that the son of man has the power—here on the earth—to forgive sins, he said to the paralytic, ‘I tell you, pick up your hammock and go home.’” And immediately he got up in front of them, picked up his hammock, and left for home glorifying God.

They were all amazed, and glorified God. Filled with fear, they said to each other, "We saw wonderful things today!”
