Healing the Centurion's Servant
Matthew 8:5-13, Luke 7:1-10
Matthew 8:5-13
As Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him, and saying, “Lord, my boy is bedridden at home paralyzed in terrible pain.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
But the centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy of you entering my house. Just say the word and my boy will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me, and I say to this man, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard his response, he was amazed and said to those traveling with him, “Truly, I tell you, I have never found this great a faith—no, not in Israel. Listen, many shall come from the east and west and shall sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be expelled into outer darkness, with weeping and gnashing of teeth.
And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way. It will be done for you as you have believed.” And the boy was healed in that hour.
Luke 7:1-10
When he had completed his teaching before the people, he went to Capernaum. And the slave of a certain centurion, who was dear to him, was sick and about to die. Hearing of Jesus, he sent the elders of the Jews to him, asking if he would come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him, saying that he was worthy of Jesus doing this because he loved their nation and had built a synagogue for them. So, Jesus went with them.
When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself. I am not worthy that you should enter my house. Moreover, I didn’t consider myself worthy to correctly approach you. Just say the word and my servant will be healed. For I am also a man under authority, and have soldiers under me. I tell one, ‘Go’ and he goes; another, ‘Come’ and he comes. I tell my servant, ‘Do this’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed by him. He turned around and said to the people that had come with him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.”
And those that had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well that had been sick.
