Teaching in Jerusalem
John 5:16-47
Therefore, the Judeans harassed Jesus because of what he had done on the Sabbath. But he responded, “My Father still works, so I work.” Therefore, the Judeans increased their efforts to kill him, because he had not only broken the Sabbath, but said that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
Jesus continued, saying, “Truly, truly, I tell you; the Son cannot do anything by himself, but only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever he does, that the Son also does. The Father loves the Son, and shows him everything he is doing—and he will show him greater things so you can be amazed. The Father raises the dead and gives them life. Even so, the Son gives life to whom he wills. The Father judges no one, but rather has given all judgment to the Son, so that everyone should honor the Son—even as they honor the Father. Those who do not honor the Son dishonor the Father, which has sent him.
“Truly, truly, I tell you, he who hears my word, and trusts him that sent me, has everlasting life. He will not be judged, but has passed from death into life.
“Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour is coming—and now is—when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear shall live. For as the Father has life in himself, he has given it to be that the Son has life in himself. He has also given him authority to execute judgment because he is the Son of man.
“Don’t marvel at this, for the hour is coming when those that are in their graves shall hear his voice, and appear—those that have done good in resurrection of life, and those that have done evil to a resurrection of damnation.
“By my own power, I can do nothing. As I hear, I judge. And my judgment is just because I don’t seek my own will, but the will of the one who has sent me. If I proclaimed myself, my witness would not be true. But there is another witness about me—and I know that what he says of me is true. You went to John and he spoke the truth. But I don’t need the testimony of man. I say these things so you can be saved.
“He was a burning and shining light, and you were willing—for a season—to enjoy his light. But I have greater witness than that of John. I do the same works that the Father has given me to finish. They bear my affirmation, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father, himself, who has sent me, affirms me.
“You have not heard his voice or seen his form. Neither do you have his word resting in you, because you don’t believe the one he has sent. You search the scriptures because you think you have eternal life in searching them. But they are that which testifies of me.
“You will not come to me to gain life. I accept no honor from men. But I know you; you don’t have the love of God in you. I have come in the name of my Father, but you reject me. Yet, if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
“How can you believe, if you honor each other, rather than seeking the honor that comes for God only? But don’t think that I will accuse you before the Father. There is another one that accuses you, Moses—in whom you trust. If you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me. But, if you don’t believe his words, how will you believe mine?
