Deliverance at the Base of the Mount
Matthew 17:14-21, Mark 9:14-29, Luke 9:37-45
Matthew 17:14-21
And when they came down to the crowd at the foot of the mountain, a man came and kneeled before him. He said, “Lord, have mercy on my son! He is mentally ill and thus, very tormented. Often, he falls into the fire—or the water. I brought him to your disciples, but and they could not cure him.”
Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon who came out of him, and the child was cured from that moment.
Later the disciples came to Jesus when they were alone, and said, “Why couldn’t we exorcise it?”
And Jesus said to them, “It was because of your limited faith! Truthfully, I tell you, if you have the faith of a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, be moved from here to there, and it will move! Nothing shall be impossible for you. Nonetheless, this kind only leaves by prayer and fasting.”
Mark 9:14-29
And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude around them, with the scribes interrogating them. And as soon as he arrived and the people saw him, they excitedly ran to him, greeting him.
And he asked the scribes, “What are you debating with them?”
And out of the crowd, one came and said, “Rabbi, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that prevents his speaking. Wherever it takes him, it throws him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth and gnashes his teeth. He is wasting away! And I spoke to your disciples, but they couldn’t cast it out.”
He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought him to him. When the spirit saw him, it instantly threw him to the ground where he thrashed about, foaming at the mouth.
And he asked his father, “How long has this been happening?”
And he said, “From childhood. Lots of times, it has thrown him into the fire—or the water—to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, everything is possible to those who believe!” And instantly, the father replied, “Lord, I believe. Please help my unbelief!”
When Jesus saw the crowd gathering, he rebuked the evil spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again!” And the spirit cried out, threw him to the ground, and came out of him. He remained unconscious and many thought he was dead. However, Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he stood.
And when he had returned home, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?”
And he said to them, “This kind can only be driven out by prayer and fasting.”
Luke 9:37-45
And it happened that on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a large crowd met him. And look! A man out of the crowd called out, “Rabbi, please! Look at my son—my only child. A spirit grabs him, and he cries out when it throws him to the ground. He foams from the mouth and it will not leave him. I pleaded with your disciples to cast it out, but they couldn’t.”
And Jesus answered him and said, “O faithless and perverted generation, how long will I be with you, and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
While he was coming, the demon threw him down in a convulsion. Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the child. Then he gave him back to his father.
And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they were talking about all the things Jesus did, he said to his disciples, “Let these sayings sink into your ears, for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.” But they didn’t understand what he meant for it was hidden from them. Therefore, they missed what he was saying, but were afraid to ask him what he meant.
