Feeding the 4,000
Matthew 15:29-38, Mark 7:31-8:9a

Matthew 15:29-38

And Jesus departed from there and came back to the Sea of Galilee, where he went up on an elevated place and sat down to teach. And great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and others with needs, putting them at Jesus's feet. He healed so many that the multitude was amazed. When they saw the mute speak, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, they glorified the God of Israel.

Then Jesus called his disciples and said, “I’m concerned about the crowd because they have been here with me for three days. They have nothing to eat and if I send them home without food, they might faint on the way.”

And his disciples said to him, “Where could we find enough bread here in the desert to fill such a crowd?”

And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?”

And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.”

And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and broke them. He gave it to his disciples, and the disciples distributed it to the crowd. They all ate and were filled. They took up of the broken pieces and it filled seven baskets. And those who ate were 4,000 men, beside women and children.

Mark 7:31-8:9a

And again, leaving the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came to the Sea of Galilee, along the coasts of Decapolis. And they brought a deaf man with an impediment in his speech to him and asked that he lay his hands on him.

And he took him away from the crowd, put his fingers in his ears, and touched his tongue with his spital. And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” Immediately, his ears were opened and restriction of his tongue was corrected allowing him to speak clearly.

He told him to not tell anyone, but the more he charged them, the more they told everyone. Astonished, they kept saying, “He does things everything that is good. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!”

In that extended ministry, the crowd was huge and without adequate food. Jesus called his disciples and said to them, “I’m concerned about the crowd because they have been here with me for three days. They have nothing to eat and if I send them home without food, they might faint on the way. Some have come a long way.”

And his disciples answered him, “From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?”

And he asked them, how many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”

And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves, gave thanks, and broke them apart. He gave it to his disciples to distribute to the people. They also had a few small fish, which he blessed, and gave out. Afterward, they gathered seven baskets of food after everyone was full. There were about 4,000 men who ate.
