Healing of Jairus’s Daughter and the Woman Enroot
Matthew 9:18-26, Mark 5:21-43, Luke 8:40-56

Matthew 9:18-26

As he was teaching these things to them…Look! One of the rulers came and worshipped him, pleading, “My daughter has just now died, but come, lay your hand on her, and she will live. Jesus got up and followed him, and so did his disciples.

And…Look! A woman, suffering from a vaginal blood discharge for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his garment. She thought, “If I just touch his garment, I will be healed.”

Jesus turned back around, saw her, and said, “Be of good cheer, daughter! Your faith has healed you.” And she was healed at that moment.

When Jesus came to the ruler's house, and saw the flute-players and loud mourners with the people, he said to them, “Leave! The girl isn’t dead. She’s just asleep.” And immediately they ridiculed him.

But when the people left, he went in, took the girl by the hand, and she got up. With that, his fame spread throughout the area.

Mark 5:21-43

And when Jesus returned by ship to the other side, large crowds of people met him. As he docked, one waiting was the leader of the synagogue, Jairus by name. When he saw him, he fell at his feet, and pleaded with him, saying, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please come, so you can lay your hands on her, so she may be healed and live.” And Jesus went with him, along with a crowd of people who followed him and surged around him.

It included a woman, suffering from a vaginal blood discharge for twelve years under the care of various physicians. It had cost her all she had, but continued to grow worse. Having heard of Jesus, she came in the press behind him and touched his garment, for she thought, “If I can just touch his clothes, I shall be healed.” And instantly, the bleeding ceased and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

At the same time, Jesus, knew that power had gone out from him, so he turned back into the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” And his disciples said to him, “You see this crowd pressing in on you, and you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”

And he kept looking around to see who had done this. But fearing and trembling, and knowing what had occurred in her body, the woman came and fell down before him, telling him her story.

And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace, and be whole from your suffering.”

While he was speaking to her, some came from synagogue leader’s house and told him, “Your daughter is dead: why bother the teacher anymore?” But overhearing what was said, Jesus said to the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” Leaving, he only took Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.

When he got to the synagogue leader’s house, he saw all the tumult with its weeping and expressing grief. When he entered, he said to those inside, “Why are you making such a fuss?  The girl is not dead, but asleep.” And immediately they ridiculed him.

But when he made everyone leave, he took the girl’s father and mother, and the three, and went into where the girl was. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, I tell you to get up.” Immediately, the child got up and walked, since she was twelve years old.

At this, they were astonished! He commanded them not to tell anyone and suggested she be fed.

Luke 8:40-56

Upon Jesus’ return, the crowd welcomed him because they had been waiting for him. And, look, Jairus, a leader of the synagogue, came and fell down at Jesus’s feet, and pleaded with him to come to his house, for he had only one daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying.

But as he went, the people thronged him. One in the crowd was a woman suffering from a vaginal blood discharge for twelve years. She had spent all her income on physicians, all of whom failed to heal her. She came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment and immediately the blood flow stopped.

Jesus said, “Who touched me?”

When everyone denied it was them, Peter and those with him said, “Rabbi, the multitude is pressing against you, and you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”

And Jesus said, “Somebody has touched me, because I felt the power released from me.” And when the woman saw that she was about to be discovered, she came trembling and fell down before him. She told him, before all the people, why she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

And he said to her, “Be of good cheer, daughter! Your faith has healed you. Go in peace, and be free from your suffering.”

As he was saying that, the servants of the synagogue leader came and one said to him, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t continue to bother the rabbi.” When Jesus overheard what was said, he said to the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.”

When he entered the house, he only allowed Peter, James, and John, the brother of James, to go in with him. Everyone inside was weeping and grieving over her, but he said, “Don’t weep; she’s not dead, just asleep.” But they ridiculed him, because they knew she was dead.

He cleared the room and took the father, mother, and the three, and went in where the girl was. He took her by the hand and said, “Talaitha koum,” which means, “Child, I tell you to get up,” and her spirit returned. So, he told them to give her something to eat. And immediately, she got up and walked, being about twelve years old.

Her parents were astonished: but he charged them to not tell anyone what had occurred.
