Jesus Discusses His Coming Death
Matthew 16:21-28, Mark 8:31-9:1, Luke 9:22-27

Matthew 16:21-28

From that time on, Jesus began to tell his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem. There, he would suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed. But he would be raised again on the third day.

Hearing this, Peter began to correct him, saying, “With God’s help, Lord, this won’t happen to you.” But he turned, and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an embarrassment to me, for you don’t sense the things of God, but are thinking like men.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whomever would save his life will lose it and whomever will lose his life for my sake will find it.

What good is it if someone gains the whole world, but loses his own soul? Or, what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? The Son of man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father. Then he will reward everyone in relation to his works. Truly, I tell you, some standing here will not taste death until they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Mark 8:31-9:1

And he began to teach them that the Son of man would suffer many things. Soon, he would be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and scribes, and be killed. But, after three days he would rise again. And he said that openly.

Hearing that, Peter took him aside and began to correct him. He turned around, faced his followers, and rebuked Peter by saying, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an embarrassment to me, for you don’t sense the things of God, but are thinking like men.”

When he had gathered the people, along with his disciples, he said to them, “Whomever follows me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whomever would save his life will lose it. But whomever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's, will thereby save it. And what good is it, if a man gains the whole world, but loses his own soul? And what will a man give for his soul?

Therefore, whomever is embarrassed by me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation—so, too, shall the Son of man be ashamed of him, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. And he said to them, “I tell you the truth, some standing here will not taste death until they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

Luke 9:22-27

He said that the Son of man must suffer many things, be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes. and be killed; but, that he would be raised the third day. And he said to everyone, “If anyone would follow me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whomever would save his life will lose it, but whomever loses his life for my sake, will actually save it. What’s the advantage, if a man gains the whole world, but loses himself, or is thrown away?

Whomever is ashamed of me and my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in his own glory—and in his Father's, and the holy angels. But I tell you a truth, there are some standing here, who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.
