Jesus Walks on the Water
Matthew 14:24-33, Mark 6:47-52, John 6:16-21
Matthew 14:24-33
The ship was well out to sea, tossed about by the waves, because the wind was against them. In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were frightened and cried out “It’s a spirit!”
But immediately, Jesus spoke to them, and said, “Cheer up! It is I; don’t be afraid.”
And Peter called back and said, “Lord, if that is you, call me to come on the water with you.” And he said, “Come.”
And when Peter climbed down out of the ship, he walked out to Jesus on the water. But when he saw the raging wind, it frightened him and he began to sink. He cried out, “Lord, save me.” And immediately Jesus reached out and caught him, as he said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
And when they got into the ship, the wind stopped. Then, those in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
Mark 6:47-52
And when evening came and the ship was well out to sea, he was alone on the land. And he saw them rowing hard because they were going against the wind. About the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking on the sea and almost passed them by.
When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a spirit. They all saw him and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and said to them, “Cheer up! It is I; don’t be afraid.”
And when he entered the ship, the wind ceased. They were amazed at the event and puzzled, for they had not realized the loaves were a miracle, because of the hardness of their hearts.
John 6:16-21
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea and caught a ship bound for Capernaum. It was past twilight and Jesus was not with them. And the sea was rough because of the gusting wind that blew. After they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea. As he came nearer to the ship, they were afraid. But he said to them, “It is I! Don’t be afraid.” Then they gladly pulled him into the ship, and immediately the ship came near where it landed.
