Peter's Confession that Jesus is the Messiah
Matthew 16:13-20, Mark 8:27-30, Luke 9:18-21
Matthew 16:13-20
When Jesus came to the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Whom do men say that I, the Son of man, am?”
And they said, “Some say that you are John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah—or one of the other prophets.”
Then he said to them, “But, whom do you say that I am?”
And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
And Jesus responded, saying, “You are blessed, Simon bar Jonah, because human intellect has not revealed that to you, but my Father which is in heaven. Furthermore, I say to you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
“And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on the earth shall be that which has been bound in heaven; and whatever you release on the earth shall be that which has been released in heaven.” Then he instructed his disciples to not tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
Mark 8:27-30
And Jesus went out with his disciples to the towns of Caesarea Philippi. As they went, he asked his disciples, “Whom do men say that I am?”
And they answered, “John the Baptist, or some say Elijah, or one of the other prophets.”
And he said to them, “But whom do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” And he instructed them to not tell anyone this.
Luke 9:18-21
And it came to pass, once as he was alone praying, while his disciples traveled with him that he asked them, “Whom do the people say that I am?” They answered, “John the Baptist. But some say Elijah, while others say that one of the old prophets has risen.”
Then he said to them, “But whom do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Messiah of God.” And he strongly commanded them to not tell anyone that truth…
