The Demoniacs of the Gadarenes
Matthew 8:28-9:1, Mark 5:1-20, Luke 8:26-39

Matthew 8:28-9:1

And when he arrived on the other side in the country of the Gadarenes, he met two demon-possessed men. Coming out of the tombs, they often fiercely prevented people from approaching the area.  Being approached, they cried out, saying, “What business do we have with you, Jesus, Son of God? Have you come here just to torment us before the time?”

Now some distance away a very large herd of pigs were feeding. So, the demons pleaded with him, saying, “If you drive us out, may we go into the herd of swine?”

So, he said to them, “Go.”

When they came out, they went into the herd of pigs. And look, the whole herd ran fitfully down a steep place in the hills and into the sea, perishing in the water.

The herdsmen fled into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the demon possessed men. And, sure enough, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their coasts. So, he entered the ship, crossed over, and came back to his own city.

Mark 5:1-20

And they crossed over to the other side of the Sea, into the Gadarenes’ country. As he left the ship, a man with an unclean spirit, dwelling in the tombs, met him. No one could bind him—no, not even with chains. Repeatedly, he had been bound with shackles and chains, but he broke the chains and shackles. Neither could any man tame him. Always, night and day, he was in the hills and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

But when he saw Jesus a distance away, he ran to him and worshipped him. He cried loudly, “What do I have to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most-High God? I beg you by God, don’t torment me!” For he had said to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.”

And he asked him, “What is your name?”

And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” And he repeatedly begged him to not send them away out of the country.

Now, a great herd of pigs were feeding there, up in the hills. And all the demons pleaded with him, saying, “Send us into the swine! Let us enter them.” So, Jesus gave them permission. And the unclean spirits left and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea. They were about 2,000 that were drowned in the sea. And the herdsmen fled, and told it in the city and in the country.

And everyone went out to see what had happened. They come to see Jesus and the man that had been possessed by the legion of demons. They found him sitting there dressed and in his right mind, which panicked them. And those that saw it told the story of the demon possessed man and the pigs. Shortly, they began to ask Jesus to leave their coasts.

And when he was ready to enter the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. But Jesus didn’t let him saying, “Go home to your friends, and tell them the great things the Lord has done for you because he had compassion on you.” And he left and spoke in the Decapolis about the great things Jesus had done for him: and everyone marveled.

Luke 8:26-39

They arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is across the Galilee. When he reached land, a certain man of the city met him. He had struggled with demons a long time, waring no clothes, and not living in a house, but in the tombs.

When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down at his feet. He shouted, “What do I have to do with you, Jesus, the Son of God Most High? Please don’t torment me!” For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (Often it seized him, so he was restrained with chains and shackles, but he would break free, being driven by the demonic into the wilderness.)

And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

And he answered, “Legion”—because many demons had entered him. And they pleaded with him to not send them far away into the abyss.

There was a large herd of pigs feeding on the hills, and they pleaded with him to let them enter the pigs, which he did. Then the demons left the man and entered the pigs. The whole herd ran fitfully down a steep place in the hills and into the sea, perishing in the water.

When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled into the city and told everything. Then they went out to see what had happened and came to Jesus. They found the man, cleansed of the demons and sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind, which frightened them. They also saw the dead pigs, and as they had been told, how he was healed.

Then the whole community of the Gadarenes pleaded with him to leave their area, because the event frightened them. Thus, he got into the boat and went back home again. The man who had been delivered pleaded to go with him, but Jesus didn’t take him, saying, “Go home and show the great things God has done for you.” And he left and told throughout the whole area what great things Jesus had done for him.”
