The Feeding of the 5,000
Matthew 14:15-21, Mark 6:34-44, Luke 9:12-17, John 6:3-13

Matthew 14:15-21

When evening came, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a wilderness and it’s getting late. Dismiss the crowd so they can go into one of the villages and buy food for themselves.”

But Jesus said to them, “They don’t need to leave. You feed them.”

And they said to him, “We only have five loaves, and two small fish.”

“All right,” he said, “Bring them to me.” And he directed the everyone in the crowd to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looked up to heaven. He then blessed the food, broke it into shares, and gave the bread to his disciples. Then the disciples passed it out to the multitude.

Everyone ate to their fill! Gathering the fragments, they completely filled twelve baskets! Those that were fed added up to about 5,000 men, plus women and children.

Mark 6:34-44

And Jesus, when he arrived, saw the crowd and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So, he began to teach them many things.

And when the day was ending, his disciples came to him, and said, “This is a wilderness and it’s getting late. Dismiss them, so they can leave, go into some of the villages, and buy their own bread. They have nothing to eat.”

He answered and said to them, “You feed them.”

And they say to him, “How can we buy them bread? It would cost eight-month’s wages to feed this many people!”

He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and check the crowd.” After obeying, they told him, “We only found five loaves and two fish.”

He then organized them by groups and had them sit down on the green grass. So, they sat down in ranks of 100 and fifty.

And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed the food. He broke the loaves and gave them to his disciples to pass out to the people. And he divided the two fish as well. Everyone ate until they were completely satisfied. Then, they gathered the fragments, filling twelve baskets full pieces of bread and fish. And those men who were fed numbered about 5,000.

Luke 9:12-17

And when the day began to end, the twelve came to him and said, “Dismiss the crowd, so they may go into the towns near here. They need lodging for the night and food, because we are here in the wilderness.”

But he said to them, “You feed them.”

And they replied, “We don’t have anything, but five loaves and two fish—unless we go buy food for all these people,” for there were about 5,000 men.

And he said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifties.”

And they did so, making them all sit down. Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed the food. He broke it up and gave it to the disciples to pass out to the people. They all ate until they were satisfied. Yet, there were twelve baskets of the fragments gathered.

John 6:3-13

And Jesus went up into a mountain and sat with his disciples. The Passover, a feast of the Jews, was coming soon. When Jesus glanced up, he saw a great throng coming to him and said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread to feed these people? He said this to test him, but knew what he was going to do.

Philip answered, “Eight month’s work wouldn’t pay for that—even if one only took a bite!”

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves, and two small fish. But what’s that with so many?”

And Jesus said, “Make the men sit down.” Now this was a grassy area. So, the men sat down, about 5,000 in all.

Jesus took the loaves, and after he had given thanks, he distributed the bread to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to those seated—and the fish as well. Each received as much as they wanted, and when they were full, he said to the disciples, “Gather up the fragments that are left; don’t lose any.”

So, they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the remains of the five barley loaves, after everyone had eaten.
