The Transfiguration
Matthew 17:1-13, Mark 9:2-13, Luke 9:28-36
Matthew 17:1-13
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them alone up into a high mountain. There, he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun and his clothing was as white as the light. And, look! Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with him.
Afterward, Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you would like, we can build three tabernacles here; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But, while he was talking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And look! A voice said out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. You listen to him.” When the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, terrified. Jesus then came and touched them, and said, “Get up. Don’t be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
As they left the mountain, Jesus directed them, saying, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of man is raised from the dead.”
And his disciples asked him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must first come?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “Elijah will come first—and restore all things. But I tell you that Elijah has already come, but they didn’t recognize him. They have done whatever they wished to him. In the same way, the Son of man will also suffer from them.” Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them of John the Baptist.
Mark 9:2-13
After six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John, alone, up into a high mountain. There, he was transfigured before them. And his raiment shone, extremely white like snow. No launderer on earth could have made them that white. While there, Elijah and Moses appeared to them and talked with Jesus.
Afterward, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tabernacles; one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He said this because he didn’t know what to say because everyone was terrified.
Then a cloud overshadowed them and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Hear him.” And suddenly, when they looked around, they saw no one still there with them, except Jesus.
And as they came down from the mountain, he directed them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of man rose from the dead. And they kept what they had heard to themselves, though they asked each other what rising from the dead meant.
Later, they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” And he said to them, “Truthfully, Elijah must come first and restore all things. And it is also written that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be disregarded. But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did whatever they wanted to him, just as it is written.
Luke 9:28-36
And it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, he took Peter, and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, his appearance changed. His clothing was white and glistened. And look! Two men, Moses and Elijah, talked with him. Appearing in glory, they talked of his departure which he would should complete at Jerusalem.
But Peter and the others with him were sleeping. When they awoke, they saw his glory, and the two men standing with him. And later, as the two left him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it was good for us to be here. Let’s build three tabernacles; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what to say.
While he was speaking, a cloud came and overshadowed them. They were terrified as they entered the cloud. And a voice in the cloud, said, “This is my beloved Son. Hear him.” When the sound ended, Jesus alone was seen. And they kept it close, and told no one what they had seen.
