After they had left, look, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, and said, “Get up quickly and take the child and his mother, and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you otherwise, for Herod is about to search for the child to kill him.”

He got up before sunrise, took the child and his mother, and left for Egypt, staying there until the death of Herod. Therefore, what was said by the Lord through the prophet was fulfilled: “Out of Egypt have I called my son.”

Then Herod, when he saw that the wisemen had fooled him, killed the children around Bethlehem in a rage. Those two years old and younger, measured from the time given him by the Magi, were all killed. Thus, the prophecy spoken by Jeremiah, the prophet was fulfilled: “In Ramah a great cry went up, lament and weeping, and great sorrow, Rachel weeping for her children. She would not be comforted, because they are not.”
