The Temptations in the Wilderness
Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4:1-13
Matthew 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty-days and forty-nights, he was hungry. Approaching him, the tempter said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” But answering, he said, “It has been written, ‘Not by bread only shall man live, but by every word coming from God’s mouth.’”
Then the devil took him into the holy city and stood him on the wing of the temple. He said to him, “If you are the Son of God, jump off, for it has been written concerning you, ‘He commands his angels to bear you up on their hands, so you don’t even stub your toe.’” Jesus said to him, “It is also written, ‘You shall not disbelievingly test the Lord, your God.’”
Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. And he said to him, “I will give you all of these if you will fall down and worship me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it has been written, ‘You shall only worship the Lord your God, and only him shall you serve!’”
Then the devil left him. And look! Angels came to him and ministered to him.
Luke 4:1-13
Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil for forty days. At the end, he was hungry.
And the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” And Jesus answered him by saying, “It has been written: ‘Man shall not live only on bread.’”
And leading him up to a high place, he instantly showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth. And the devil said to him, “I will give all of these to you as well as their splendor. They have been delivered to me and I can give them to whomever I wish. Therefore, worship before me and I will give all of them to you.”
Jesus again answered him, saying, “It has been written: ‘You shall worship the Lord, your God and only him shall you serve.’”
And he led him to Jerusalem and placed him on the peak of the temple. He said to him, “If you are the Son of God, jump off—for it has been written, ‘He will command his angels to protect you. And they will bear you up to prevent you from even stubbing your toe on a rock.’”
And Jesus answered him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not disbelievingly test the Lord, your God.’”
Having finished all his temptations, the devil left him for a time.
Mark 1:12-13
