Jesus Appears to the Eleven

Mark 16:14, Luke 24:36-48, John 20:19-25

Mark 16:14

Afterward, he appeared to the eleven as they were eating and chided them about their unbelief and stubbornness because they didn’t believe the report of those who had seen him after he was risen. (The two most reliable early manuscripts do not have Mark 16:9-20.)

Luke 24:36-48

And as they were talking, Jesus himself stood in their midst, and said to them, “Peace be to you.” However, they were terrified and assumed they had seen a ghost.

And he said to them, “Why are you so disturbed and why are you thinking these things? Look at my hands and feet! This is me. Touch me and see. No spirit has flesh and bones, like I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. They were joyful, but still doubted. So, he said to them, “Do you have anything to eat?”

So, they gave him a piece of broiled fish and a piece of honeycomb. He took it and ate it as they watched. And he said to them, “This what I told you when I was with you, that everything written in the Law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms, must be fulfilled about me.”

Then explained the scriptures, helping them understand. He said to them, “See, it is written that the Messiah must suffer and rise on the third day. And that repentance and forgiveness of sin be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.”

John 20:19-25

Then the same day at evening, that is, the first day of the week, when the disciples were together fearing the Judeans, Jesus came and stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace be to you.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad because they had seen the Lord.

Then Jesus said again to them, “Peace be to you. As my Father has sent me, so send I you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Of whomever you forgive sins, they have been forgiven to them. And whomever you hold, they have been held.”1

But Thomas, one of the twelve called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. When the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord,” he said, “Unless I see the nail-print in his hands and put my finger in them—even put my hand into his side—I won’t believe it.”
