Crowd Questions that the Messiah is to Die

John 12:34-36a

Sunday, March 1, 33 A.D.

Exterior Court of the Gentiles, Jerusalem Temple

It’s hard to tell what attitude Jesus responded to. The crowd was a mix of those ready to follow him as the Messiah and those who opposed him. Generally, this is viewed as opposition, but maybe not. It was a legitimate question.

There are two pictures of the Messiah that the scripture gives; the kink and the suffering servant. The people of Jesus’s day concentrated on hoping for the king and didn’t pay much attention to the servant qualities. Rabbinic Judaism of today present these two as separate people.
