The Cup of Redemption

Matthew 26:27-29; Mark 14:23-25; Luke 22:22

Wednesday Evening, March 4, 33 A.D.

Jerusalem

In today’s Passover meal there is a break between what is called Hillel’s sandwich and the latter teaching section known as the Aphikoman. Between these two teaching times, the family has their main meal.

The first thing done in this second teaching time is the Tzaphun, which is the retrieval of the portion of the second matzah, which has been hidden away. It is shared at this time. Again, the source of this is unknown in Rabbinic writings. It would seem that this was a modification that the Jewish church continued after the resurrection. On the night when Jesus added this to the traditional Passover celebration, it may have not had this break between the two teaching sections.

After the retrieval of the hidden matzah, the third cup of wine is drunk. It is the cup of Redemption.
