The Disciples Pledge of Loyalty
Matthew 26:31-35; Mark 14:27-31
Pre-dawn, Thursday, March 5, 33 A.D.
Leaving Jerusalem
Though this focuses on Peter’s claim of steadfast loyalty, it was a group response. They all repeated their assertions that they would not betray Jesus. We have no record of anyone wondering where Judas was, or that his absence might have had anything to do with the betrayal.
As to the time key, Matthew and Mark clearly place this after they left the banquet. Luke places his report of Peter’s pledge earlier. Surely, that would have been discussed more than once since none could see themselves as the betrayer. Thus, it seems this strong stand of Peter came up again as they left.
