Jesus Betrayed by a Kiss
Matthew 26:47-56, Mark 14:43-52, Luke 22:47-53, John 18:2-11
Matthew 26:47-56
And while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came with a sizable group. Armed with swords and staves, they came from the chief priests and leaders of the people. Now, the betrayer gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss is the one. Restrain him quickly.”
He came straight to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi,” and kissed him.
Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have come?”
Then they came and forcibly took Jesus. And, look, one of the disciples with Jesus drew his sword and struck one of the high priest's servants, cutting off his ear.
Then Jesus said to him, “Put up your sword. Everyone who takes up the sword will die by the sword. Don’t you think that I can ask my Father and he would give me more than twelve legions of angels? But if so, how then would the scriptures be fulfilled? Thus, it must be.”
In the same time, Jesus said to those who had arrived, “Did you come out with swords and staves, as against a thief, to take me? I taught you daily in the temple, yet no one arrested me.”
However, all this was done so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled. Then all the disciples abandoned him and fled.
Mark 14:43-52
And as he was speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came with a large crowd, armed with swords and staves. They came from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. And the betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss is the one. Take him, and lead him away safely.”
And as soon as he had come, he went straight to him and said, “Rabbi, Rabbi,” and kissed him. And they forcibly took him.
One of them standing there drew a sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out as you would against a thief, with swords and with staves, to take me? I was with you daily in the temple teaching, and you didn’t take me. But the scriptures must be fulfilled.”
And they all left him and fled. A young man, a follower of Jesus, was there with only a linen cloth as a covering over his body. They grabbed him, but he slipped out of the linen cloth and fled naked.
Luke 22:47-53
While he was still speaking, a crowd came with Judas, one of the twelve. He led them, coming to Jesus and kissed him.
But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?”
When those with him saw what was happening, they asked, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
And Jesus answered and said, “Stop this.” And he touched his ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the captains of the temple, and elders, who approached him, “Have you come as you would against a thief, with swords and staves? When I was with you each day in the temple, you made no effort to take me. But this is your hour, and that of the power of darkness.
John 18:2-11
Judas, who betrayed him, knew where Jesus often went with his disciples. So, Judas gathered a crowd of men, officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, and came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen, went to them and said, “Whom are you seeking?”
They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Jesus said to them, “I am he.”
Now Judas, who betrayed him, was part of the crowd. Then, as soon as he said, “I am he,” they fell backward to the ground. Then he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?”
And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Jesus answered, “I have just told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, let the others leave”—that the saying which he said earlier might be fulfilled, ‘of those you gave me, I have lost none.’
Then Simon Peter having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
Then Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword in its sheath. The cup which my Father has given me, shall I not drink it?”
