Jesus Comforts the Disciples
Luke 22:35-39, John 14:1-31a
John 14:1-31a
“Don’t let your heart be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will return and gather you unto me, so that where I am, you will also be. You know where I am going and you know the way.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, but through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father as well. From now on, you know him and have seen him.”
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough.”
Jesus said to him, “Phillip, have I been with you so long and you don’t know me? Whomever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’
“Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? What I tell you are not just my words, but the Father that dwells in me, he does the works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe me because of the miracles. I tell you the truth, whomever believes on me will do the works than I do. He shall do even greater works because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so the Father can be glorified in the Son.
“If you ask anything in my name, I will do it. If you love me, keep my commandments and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another comforter to be with you forever—even the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive him, because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you know him for he dwells with you and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you.
“Before long, the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me. Because I live, you shall also live. On that day, you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I in you. He who keeps my commandments is he that loves me, and he that loves me will be loved by my Father; and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”
Judas—not Iscariot—said to him, “Lord, how will you reveal yourself to us and not to the world?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my commands and my Father will love him. We will come to him and dwell with him. Those who don’t love me will not keep my commands.
“I have told you these things while I was with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, will be sent in my name by the Father. He shall teach you all things, and help you remember what I have said to you.
Peace, I leave with you. My peace I give to you, not as the world gives, do I give it. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. You have heard what I have said to you, that I am going away but will return to you. If you loved me, you would rejoice, because I said, ‘I go to the Father’ for my Father is greater than I am.
“Now I have told you before it happened, so that when it occurs, you will believe. Afterward, I’ll not talk with you much, because the prince of this world is coming. He has nothing in me, but that the world may know that I love the Father, and as he commands, I do.”
