Jesus Questioned by the Sanhedrin
Matthew 26:59-68, Mark 14:55-65, Luke 22:67-71
Matthew 26:59-68
Now the chief priests and elders, and all the Sanhedrin, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death, but found none. Though many false witnesses came, no credible witness was found. At last, two false witnesses came and said, “This fellow said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.”
And the high priest stood up and said to him, “Have you nothing to say? Are these witnesses against you, correct?”
Jesus said nothing.
And the high priest spoke to him again, and said, “I command you by the living God, that you tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
Jesus said to him, “It’s as you’ve said. Nevertheless, I say to you, eventually you will see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”
Then the high priest tore his clothes, and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, you just now heard his blasphemy. How do you vote?”
They replied, “He deserves to die!”
Then they spit in his face and struck him. Others slapped him with their hands, saying, “Prophesy, you Messiah! Who hit you?”
Mark 14:55-65
The chief priests and all the Sanhedrin looked for any witness against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. Many swore falsely against him, but their statements didn’t agree. Then some came and falsely testified against him, saying, “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.” But their story didn’t even agree.
And the high priest stepped forward and asked Jesus, “Have you nothing to say? Are these witnesses against you, correct?”
But he was quiet and said nothing.
Again, the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
And Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “Why do we need any more witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. How do you vote?”
And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. And some began to spit on him, cover his face, and to buffet him, saying to him, “Prophesy! And the servants slapped him with the palms of their hands.”
Luke 22:67-71, KJV
“Are you the Messiah? Tell us.”
And he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe. And if I also ask you, you will not answer me or let me go. Hereafter the Son of man shall sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
Then they all said, “Are you then the Son of God?”
And he said to them, “You say that I am.”
And they said, “Why do we need any more witness? We, ourselves, have heard this from his own mouth.”
