A Night of Extended Ministry

Matthew 8:14-17, Mark 1:29-38, Luke 4:38-43

Capernaum, Galilee

Early in 31 A.D.

One wonders why the curing of a headache would have been kept in the sacred record, but its value is a bit more visible when linked to the synagogue deliverance. In the deliverance of the demon-controlled man, Jesus showed his power and authority over the greatest of all spiritual enemies. With the headache cure, we see his authority over the physical world, even to the small of needs.

After the call of the first four disciples, they went straight to the synagogue. This had to be an early evening service at the start of Sabbath (early Friday evening,) rather than on Saturday, because the four were working when called. Just after the service, he and his quartet of disciples went to Peter’s house—most likely to enjoy the Sabbath dinner. That was not to be however. Peter’s mother-in-law was sick, so Jesus continued to minister.

As the evening continued, the word of the deliverance would have been spread through the town and Jesus and the four were soon engulfed with needs. That continued until what we would call pre-dawn, when Jesus slipped away to pray.
