A Night of Extended Ministry

Matthew 8:14-17, Mark 1:29-38, Luke 4:38-43

Matthew 8:14-15

When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her. She got up and waited on them.

As evening came, they brought many demon-infected people to him and he cast out the spirits by his command. He healed all that were sick, fulfilling what was said by Isiah, the prophet, “He took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.”

Mark 1:29-38

Leaving the synagogue, they went to the house of Simon and Andrew, along with James and John. Now, the mother-in-law of Simon was in bed with a fever and they told him about her. He went to her, took her by the hand and the fever left her. After which she served them.

As the evening came, after sunset, they brought all of the sick and those possessed with demons to him. The entire city was crowded around the door. And he healed many that were ill with various sicknesses, and cast out many demons. He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew him.

And early, before dawn, he left and went to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and the others went looking for him, and when they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you!”

But he said to them, “Rather, let’s go somewhere else to the neighboring towns, so I can teach there, too. That’s the purpose for which I came.”

Luke 4:38-43

And he stood up and left the synagogue, leaving for Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was suffering with a high fever, so they asked him to heal her. Standing over her, he censured the fever and it left her. Immediately she got up and served them.

Now as the sun was setting, everyone with sick relatives or friends brought them to him, no matter the disease. He laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. Demons came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But he forbad them to speak, since they knew he was the Messiah.

As day broke, he left and went to a desert place. The crowds sought him, and when they found him, would not leave, but crowded around him, preventing him from leaving. But he said to them, “I must teach about the kingdom of God to other cities, too. That’s the purpose for which I came.”
