Demonic Challenge in the Synagogue

Mark 1:21-28; Luke 4:33-37

Capernaum, Galilee

Pre-Spring, 31 A.D.

Mark calls the source of interruption in the synagogue an unclean spirit. What does he mean? One who was physically unclean was quarantined—separated from the community. Perhaps this is a comment on their separated state from God. Luke comes right to the point and calls the spirit a demon.

What amazed those at the synagogue was the authority and power of Jesus, which not only impressed them, but became the talk throughout Galilee.
