Payment of the Temple Tax
Matthew 17:24-27
Capernaum
Fall, 32 A.D.

The return to Capernaum, following the Transfiguration, begins with Peter stepping beyond his authority. When asked about payment of the temple tax, Peter assumed Jesus would make this customary payment to the support of the Temple in Jerusalem.

Most likely, the collection of this was an honor given to someone in the local synagogue, in this case the one in Capernaum. By the last month in the Jewish calendar, the money needed to have been collected. Later, it would be taken to Jerusalem and paid on Adar 25, which fell on March 15, in 33 A.D. We don’t know how early they began their collection, but Peter was contacted before Tabernacles, which came in the latter half of October that year.
