Payment of the Temple Tax
Matthew 17:24-27

When they came to Capernaum, the one who collected the temple fee came to Peter, and said, “Does your rabbi pay tribute?”

He said, “Yes.”

But when he came into the house, Jesus stopped him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth require taxes or tribute—of their own children, or of strangers?”

Peter said to him, “Of strangers.”

Jesus then said, “Then the children are free. Nonetheless, so we don’t offend them, go down to the sea and throw in a hook. Take the first fish you catch, and when you open its mouth, you will find a piece of money. Take that and give it to them for me and you.
