Jesus Puts to Sea on the Galilee
Matthew 8:18-27, Mark 4:35-41, Luke 8:22-25

Matthew 8:18-27

Now when Jesus saw that great multitudes had gathered, he set out to go to the other side. And a scribe came, and said to him, “Rabbi, I will follow you wherever you go.”

But Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to rest his head.”

And another of his followers said to him, “Lord, let me go with you after I bury my father.”

But Jesus said to him, “Follow me and let the dead bury their dead.”

After he had entered a ship, his disciples joined him. And great storm came up while at sea, so much so that the waves splashed over into the ship. He was asleep, but his disciples came, woke him up, and said, “Lord, save us or we will perish!”

And he said to them, “Why are you afraid? You people have almost no faith!” Then he got up, and scolded the winds and the sea, and they calmed. The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him.”

Mark 4:35-41

And the same day, when evening had come, he said, “Let’s cross the lake. And after dismissing the crowds, they had him get into the boat, just as he was. Other small boats joined them. At sea, a great wind storm developed, with waves splashing over the boat filling it. He was in the back of the boat, asleep on a pillow. They woke him up, saying to him, “Rabbi, don’t you care that we are about to die?”

And he got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still.” The wind stopped and the sea became very calm. And he said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Why don’t you have any faith?” This frightened them as well, as they said to each other, “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

Luke 8:22-25

Now, on a certain day, as he entered a ship with his disciples, he said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” And they left port to do so. As they sailed, he fell asleep. As they went, a windstorm came up on the lake filling the boat with water, and placing them in jeopardy. They woke him up, saying, “Master, master, we are perishing!”

Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the raging water— which ceased, becoming calm. And he said to them, “Where is your faith?” Frightened by this, they said to each other, “What sort of man is this? When he commands, even the winds and water obey him.”
