Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
Matthew 13:54-58; Mark 6:1-6a
Matthew 13:54-58
And when he came back to his hometown, he taught them in their synagogue and astounded them. Therefore, they kept saying to each other, “Where did this man get his wisdom and perform these signs? Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t this Mary’s child and aren’t his brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And his sisters—don’t they still live here? Where did he get all this power? And they were offended by him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is honored everywhere, except in his own country and by his own family.” And he did only a few signs there, because of their unbelief.
Mark 6:1-6a
And he left there and went back to his hometown, taking his disciples with him. And when Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astonished, and said to each other, “Where did he get this power and who gave him this wisdom, and the ability to perform the signs he does? Isn’t this the carpenter—the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judah, and Simon—and don’t his sisters still live here?” And they were offended by him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is honored everywhere, except in his own country and among his own relatives, and in his own hometown.” And he could not perform any mighty works there, except he laid his hands on a few sick folk, and healed them. And he was amazed by their unbelief.
