Jesus Appears on the Road to Emmaus

Mark 16:12-13; Luke 24:13-35

Road to Emmaus

Sunday Afternoon, March 8, 33 A.D.

Later that Sunday afternoon, Jesus appeared to two disciples who were not part of the Eleven. These disciples returned to Jerusalem that same evening and—if the assumption that these are the two of which Mark speaks—reported their contact with the living Lord.

Again, if the two reported by Mark are the two on the road to Emmaus, we have what seems confusion on a minor point. Mark says when they reported having seen Jesus, they were not believed. Luke says that when they reached the Eleven, they affirmed Jesus’ resurrection by saying that Jesus had also appeared to Peter. It was, no doubt, a mixture of the two. Some believed and gave Peter’s sighting as their proof, while others doubted. Surely, Thomas wasn’t the only skeptic, since Luke continues by saying that Jesus then appeared to the group and chided them for their unbelief.
