Jesus Appears on the Road to Emmaus
Mark 16:12-13, Luke 24:13-35
Mark 16:12-13
After that, he appeared in another form to two of them as they walked out into the country. They later told this to the rest, but they didn’t believe them.
Luke 24:13-35
Look, two of them left the same day for a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. As they walked, they discussed what had earlier happened. And as they speculated about it, Jesus joined them and walked with them. However, they were blind as to who he was.
And he said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk? And why are you so sad?”
And the one of them, Cleopas by name, said to him, “Are you a stranger in Jerusalem, and therefore, don’t know what has happened the last few days?”
And he said to them, “What things?”
And they answered, “It concerns Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet doing powerful deeds and teaching God’s word to the people. And how the chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be killed, crucifying him.
“But we believed that he was the one to redeem Israel. Besides all this, today is the third day since these things were done. Yes, and some women of our group astounded us. They went early to his tomb but didn’t find his body. So, they came, saying that they had seen a vision of angels, which said he was alive. Some of the disciples went to the sepulcher and found it as they had said. But they didn’t see him.”
Then he said to them, “How foolish you people are; and skeptical of what the prophets have said! Shouldn’t the Messiah have gone through this to enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained all the scriptures to them concerning himself.
And as they approached the village they were going to, he acted as though he was traveling on. But they insisted he stay, saying, “Stay with us. It’s soon going to be evening and the day is almost over.” And he stayed with them as their guest.
It happened, that as he sat down to eat with them, that he took the bread and blessed it. As he broke it and gave it to them, their eyes were opened. As they realized who he was, he disappeared from their sight.
And they said to each other, “Weren’t our emotions stirred as he walked along talking with us, explaining the scriptures?” And they got up immediately and returned to Jerusalem.
They found the Eleven together with some others. When told, they said, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.” And they told what had occurred as they walked home, and how they realized it was him when he broke the bread.
